The Cabinet approves the railway link with Qatar and forms a committee to ban asbestos

The Cabinet, chaired by the Crown Prince, approves the electric train link with Qatar, forms a committee to follow up on the asbestos ban, and reviews developments in Gaza and international relations.

In its latest session, the Cabinet reviewed a number of political, economic, and developmental issues, beginning with an overview of the diplomatic efforts led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to strengthen its international relations. In this context, the Cabinet was briefed on the content of the communications and discussions held by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, with several world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. These initiatives aim to solidify the Kingdom's position as a pivotal partner in international decision-making and to enhance strategic partnerships in a way that serves mutual interests.

Strengthening Gulf integration and railway connectivity

In a move reflecting the deep fraternal ties and the desire to accelerate economic integration among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the Cabinet approved the agreement for a high-speed electric rail link between the governments of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar. This project is part of a broader strategic vision to connect the Gulf states with a modern railway network, which will directly contribute to facilitating transportation and trade, strengthening social bonds, and supporting the tourism and logistics sectors in the region, in line with sustainable development goals.

Protecting public health and banning asbestos

Domestically, and in line with the state's commitment to protecting public health and the environment, the Council issued a resolution to form a permanent committee dedicated to all matters related to asbestos and monitoring its ban. This step is of paramount importance given the globally documented health risks associated with this substance, which is classified as a carcinogen and poses a direct threat to human health. The formation of this committee reflects the Kingdom's commitment to international environmental and health safety standards and its ongoing efforts to eliminate harmful materials and provide a safe environment for citizens and residents.

Diplomatic efforts and support for regional stability

On the regional front, the Council followed current developments, affirming the Kingdom's continued efforts to engage with the international community to support regional security, call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and advance the two-state solution. The Council also reiterated its support for the outcomes of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, emphasizing the need to combat transnational terrorism. In a related matter, the Council commended the development of relations with the Syrian Arab Republic and the reciprocal visits aimed at launching strategic projects in vital sectors such as water and aviation, which will contribute to reconstruction and support the Syrian economy.

Strategic decisions and approvals

The Council concluded its session by issuing a package of decisions and approvals that included authorizing the Minister of Energy to discuss with Jordan and Turkey cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, approving cultural and health memoranda of understanding with Uzbekistan and Syria, in addition to adopting the organizational arrangements for the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Global Center for Arabic Calligraphy, which enhances the Kingdom’s cultural presence globally.
