Riyadh Projects: Towards Integrated Environmental and Water Sustainability

Development projects to promote environmental sustainability in Riyadh

Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Riyadh Region, inaugurated 82 development projects in the fields of environment, water and agriculture at a cost exceeding 9.8 billion riyals, and laid the foundation stone for 99 other projects at a cost exceeding 28.3 billion riyals, within the framework of supporting the achievement of environmental and water sustainability in accordance with Vision 2030.

Promoting environmental and water sustainability

Prince Faisal bin Bandar affirmed that these projects are a continuation of the great support that the environment, water and agriculture sector enjoys from the wise leadership, noting that these projects represent a qualitative leap towards achieving environmental, water and agricultural sustainability, which contributes to supporting natural resources and providing a healthy and safe environment that enhances the quality of life of citizens and residents in the Kingdom.

The "North Riyadh Geopark" project joins the UNESCO list

The Prince noted the inclusion of the “North Riyadh Geopark” project in the UNESCO list, stressing that this international recognition came as a result of the wise directives of the wise leadership and the skillful and integrated role played by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture.

Speech by the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture

Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadhli, explained that these projects serve all cities and governorates of the Riyadh region and its centers, in implementation of the directives of the wise leadership in line with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, stressing that the projects come to enhance the drinking water distribution system for beneficiaries in the region.

The minister pointed out that the National Water Company implemented 61 projects to deliver drinking water and sewage services at a cost exceeding 4.5 billion riyals, while the Saudi Water Authority implemented 3 projects to enhance the production of desalinated water at a cost exceeding 5.1 billion riyals.

Various environmental and water projects

The National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification implemented 10 environmental projects at a cost exceeding 61.2 million riyals, aimed at rehabilitating 4,000 hectares in Al-Zulfi Governorate and developing national parks. The projects also included planting 520,000 seedlings in the Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Royal Reserve, Abasmari Park, Hawtat Bani Tamim Governorate, and Rawdat Sudair.

New projects to boost the agricultural sector

Minister Al-Fadhli revealed the laying of the foundation stone for 99 projects in the environment, water and agriculture sectors at a cost exceeding 28.3 billion riyals, including projects to enhance drinking water and sanitation services in the region, in addition to 8 development projects to enhance the capacity of the agricultural sector at a cost exceeding 254 million riyals.

The Kingdom's commitment to protecting its natural resources

The Governor of Riyadh Region watched a visual presentation of the “North Riyadh Geopark” project, which was registered on the UNESCO list as the first country in the Middle East to register two global geopark sites from the first nomination, an achievement that reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to protecting its natural resources and promoting sustainable local development.
