The Royal Commission for Riyadh City announced a new strategic step to enhance the efficiency of the public transport system in the Saudi capital, awarding the contract for the design, construction, and completion of the new extension to the Red Line of the Riyadh Metro network. The project includes adding up to 8.4 kilometers to the existing line, extending from King Saud University to the Diriyah Gate development project, and includes the construction of five new stations serving these vital areas.
Strengthening the strategic link between education and heritage
This expansion is a key component of Riyadh's infrastructure development plans, aiming to create a direct transportation artery connecting the prestigious King Saud University with the world-renowned heritage and tourist destination, Diriyah Gate. This connection will facilitate movement for students, tourists, and residents alike, enhancing integration between residential areas and educational and cultural centers, and reducing reliance on private vehicles on these congested routes.
Diriyah Gate: A global destination served by the Riyadh Metro
This project is particularly significant given its location at the Diriyah Gate, one of the Public Investment Fund's mega-projects. As Diriyah transforms into a global cultural and tourist hub, attracting visitors from within the Kingdom and abroad, providing sustainable and reliable public transportation becomes essential. The five new stations will play a crucial role in accommodating the anticipated influx of visitors, supporting national tourism objectives and facilitating access to UNESCO-listed historical sites.
The backbone of transportation in the capital
The Riyadh Metro project is the backbone of the city's public transport network and was designed to be a radical solution to traffic congestion challenges. This expansion complements the work already accomplished on the project, which was sponsored by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and inaugurated in November 2024. The network enhances the quality of life in the capital by providing safe and environmentally friendly transportation options, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and an improved urban landscape.
Supporting the leadership and Vision 2030
This project is part of a series of major development projects underway in Riyadh during the reign of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and is being closely monitored and continuously guided by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. These steps reflect the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to make Riyadh one of the top 10 city economies in the world by developing world-class infrastructure that supports rapid population and economic growth.
