Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud
Birth, upbringing, and education
His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was born on 15 Dhu al-Hijjah 1405 AH, corresponding to 31 August 1985 AD, in the capital city of Riyadh. He was raised under the care of his father, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and his mother, Princess Fahda bint Falah bin Sultan Al Hithlain.
His Highness received his general education in Riyadh schools, ranking among the top ten students in the Kingdom during his secondary school years. He completed his university studies and earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from King Saud University, graduating second in his class from the College of Law and Political Science. He also participated in numerous specialized courses and programs throughout his education.
Practical experience and first positions
Prince Mohammed bin Salman began his professional career before assuming government positions, gaining ten years of experience in the private sector. He founded several businesses after graduating from university and has undertaken numerous charitable initiatives and activities, for which he has received awards.
His Highness held several important government positions, including:
• Full-time consultant at the Council of Ministers’ Experts Authority: from 22 Rabi’ al-Awwal 1428 AH, corresponding to 10 April 2007 AD, until 28 Dhu al-Hijjah 1430 AH, corresponding to 16 December 2009 AD.
• Special Advisor to the Governor of Riyadh Region: From 28 Dhu al-Hijjah 1430 AH, corresponding to 16 December 2009 AD.
• Secretary General of the Riyadh Center for Competitiveness.
• Special advisor to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the King Abdulaziz Foundation.
• Member of the Supreme Executive Committee for the Development of Diriyah.
• Supervisor of the Crown Prince’s Private Office and Special Affairs: After His Highness moved from the Emirate of Riyadh Region.
• Head of the Crown Prince’s Court and Special Advisor to him with the rank of Minister: Dated 20 Rabi’ al-Thani 1434 AH, corresponding to 2 March 2013 AD.
• General Supervisor of the Office of the Minister of Defense: Dated 5 Ramadan 1434 AH, corresponding to 13 July 2013 AD.
• Minister of State and Member of the Council of Ministers: Dated 25 Jumada al-Akhirah 1435 AH, corresponding to 25 April 2014 AD.
• Chairman of the Executive Committee at the King Abdulaziz Foundation and Vice Chairman of its Board of Directors: Dated 23 Dhu al-Qi’dah 1435 AH, corresponding to 18 September 2014 AD.
Ministerial and leadership positions
His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman has held a number of ministerial and leadership positions that have brought about a qualitative shift in the development and reform process in the Kingdom, most notably:
• Minister of Defense, Head of the Royal Court, and Special Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques: on 3 Rabi' al-Thani 1436 AH, corresponding to 23 January 2015 AD. He also chaired the Board of Directors of the General Authority for Military Industries in his capacity as Minister of Defense.
• Chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs: Dated 9 Rabi’ al-Thani 1436 AH, corresponding to 29 January 2015 AD.
• Member of the Council of Political and Security Affairs: Dated 9 Rabi’ al-Thani 1436 AH, corresponding to 29 January 2015 AD.
• Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Public Investment Fund: Dated 3 Jumada al-Akhirah 1436 AH, corresponding to 23 March 2015 AD.
Crown Prince and Prime Minister
On the 26th of Ramadan, 1438 AH (corresponding to June 21, 2017), a royal decree was issued appointing His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman as Crown Prince, based on the support of a majority of the members of the Allegiance Council (31 out of 34). He was sworn in at Al-Safa Palace in Mecca. He was also appointed Deputy Prime Minister, while continuing in his role as Minister of Defense, and undertaking other assigned duties.
On 20 Rabi’ al-Thani 1440 AH, corresponding to 27 December 2018 AD, a royal decree was issued appointing His Highness as Chairman of the Council of Political and Security Affairs.
On 1 Rabi’ al-Awwal 1444 AH, corresponding to September 27, 2022 AD, a royal decree was issued appointing His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince, as Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
Current positions
His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman currently holds a number of senior positions in the Kingdom, most notably:
