Facing intellectual challenges in a changing world
In a keynote address delivered at the 38th Annual Conference of Muslims in Latin America and the Caribbean, Saudi Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, Dr. Abdul Latif Al-Sheikh, emphasized that the world is witnessing major transformations and rapid changes, resulting in serious intellectual and moral challenges. He explained that these transformations have been accompanied by a noticeable rise in extremist rhetoric that promotes fanaticism and takfir (excommunication), and conversely, a spread of calls for atheism and moral decay, placing Muslim youth in direct confrontation with ideas that threaten their identity and faith.
The Minister's address, delivered on his behalf by the Undersecretary for Islamic Affairs, Dr. Awad Al-Anzi, in São Paulo, Brazil, highlighted the immense responsibility placed upon scholars, preachers, and educators in safeguarding the minds of young people. He emphasized that the youth stage, a time of learning and diligence, is paramount in shaping an individual's character and determining their future path, affirming that their well-being is the foundation for the well-being and advancement of nations.
Global context and importance of the conference
This conference comes at a time of immense global digital transformation, where digital platforms and artificial intelligence have become key tools in shaping public opinion. This reality presents new challenges, as these technologies are sometimes used to spread misinformation and destructive ideas with unprecedented speed. Hence, the importance of holding such international conferences, which bring together thought leaders and researchers to discuss ways to address these emerging issues. The choice of the title “Muslim Youth in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Prospects and Challenges” reflects a profound awareness of the need to keep pace with the times and utilize its tools to serve the causes of the Muslim community, rather than leaving the field open to negative influences.
The impact of this event extends beyond the local level in Brazil, reaching regionally and internationally. It provides a platform for exchanging experiences among Muslim communities, particularly minorities striving to preserve their identity while positively integrating into their societies. The conference's outcomes are expected to contribute to developing a practical roadmap for Islamic preachers and institutions worldwide on how to utilize technology to promote tolerant Islamic values.
The Saudi model: A balance between tradition and modernity
Al-Sheikh highlighted the pioneering experience of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as a model to be emulated in balancing adherence to religious principles with embracing the means of development. He pointed out that the Kingdom was founded on the principles of moderation and centrism, and the application of the Quran and Sunnah, which has made it a bulwark against extremist ideologies. At the same time, it was among the first countries to recognize the importance of artificial intelligence, establishing the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) to lead the national direction in this vital field, and launching ambitious initiatives such as “One Million Saudis for Artificial Intelligence – SAMAI” to develop a generation equipped with the skills of the future, as part of the objectives of Vision 2030.
Recommendations for the future of Muslim youth
The minister concluded his remarks by emphasizing that adherence to the correct doctrine, based on a moderate understanding of Islam, is the foundation of dignity and honor. He expressed his hope that the conference would produce practical recommendations that would empower Muslim youth to confront intellectual challenges, raise their awareness of the optimal use of artificial intelligence technologies, and employ them in the service of Islamic scholarship and calling to God with wisdom and good counsel. He also thanked the Islamic Call Center in Latin America and the Caribbean for organizing this important event, which represents a necessary step towards building a brighter future for Muslim youth worldwide.
